[UPDATE]
Monty Python’s Youtube Channel
For 3 years you YouTubers have been ripping us off, taking tens of thousands of our videos and putting them on YouTube. Now the tables are turned. It’s time for us to take matters into our own hands.

Thomas Meyerhoffer Longboards
Thomas Meyerhoffer describes the new longboard he has licensed to Modern Longboards and Global Surf Industries for worldwide distribution.

To keep the spirits up, here’s some pics from the Four Oceans tournament, in Algarve.
More here and here.

Everywhere is the same. All over the world and in every language. There will always be a bunch of local surfers that don’t want anybody else on their front yard. Obviously, they love to go on surf trips to their neighbour’s front yard, but that’s a different story.
Some of the best days I had this year were in the water with my friends. Some of the best waves I surfed, I shared with my friends. It’s an amazing feeling when everybody’s happy in the water.
[written after reading this post in splashsurfmag. It's in Portuguese, but the picture tells it all]

Yesterday I got the opportunity to watch a presentation by Martin Varsavsky* in a conference in Lisbon. He’s quite an interesting guy and made one of the best presentations of the conference. He talked about the web, and how he still is optimistic about this economic crisis**. He also talked about craziness and about the fear of ridicule.
I’m still trying to get the movie of this presentation, but in the meantime you can check his blog. A special notice to this post “Where is the future that we were promised?”

* Martin Varsavsky is one of the participants of the 18th Communications Congress, which I’m attending. This year’s theme is the role of the IT companies in the current energy and financial crises.

** In his blog: «I spent all day speaking to entrepreneurs at two conferences in Lisbon and Monaco at APCD and MMF. In both cases I tried to sound confident, to speak about the opportunities that crisis have for all of us. But as I return to my hotel room at 2 am and see how the US markets closed I am finally capitulating myself.»

Finally, Oceanlab’s new website is up and running.
We’ve created Oceanlab in 2002, and we have never had a decent website.
We always have to much work to do, we never have time, so we never went further than just some temporary websites.
And you know how this things are, we’re always the most difficult client.
But it’s finally online and we’re happy.
Only the portuguese version is available for now, but there’s more to come.

This morning we’ve decided to go back to Caparica to see how things were, after the changes. It was a strange day of surf, but we’ve seen some guys having a ball.
Like the guy on the photo, for instance.
It’s Paulo Jacinto with a pretty cool surfboard from… Paulo Jacinto Surfboards.
Check out his site and his blog. He has some really cool stuff.

Today’s surfing conditions weren’t the best, but I really wanted to get in the water, and ten days had passed since my last surfing day, so… No more excuses needed.
Woke up at 7AM, left my girl in bed and went surfing.
This picture was taken after the surfing session, in Parede’s beach, where I’ve never surfed, but I’ve seen some pretty good waves. Maybe tomorrow’s the day.
(more pics on Flickr)

My mom’s cat was attacked by some dogs and survived. But for three weeks we didn’t knew if she would ever walk again.
SHE’S FINE!!!!!

An International Cartoon Festival is taking place until the next weekend, in Amadora.
Usually I would wait until the last day, but this year I decided to go early.
So, on Saturday there we were.
Some pretty cool stuff, the classics, the newcomers, the internationally acclaimed and the not so internationally acclaimed portuguese illustrators.
There were some amazing illustrations like the picture above (representing Lisbon), from the brilliant João Abel Manta. You can check more here and here.
A special notice to Rui Lacas, Luis Henriques and the 1979 illustrations from Vitor Mesquita (that includes a Biologic Experimentation Lab above São Jorge’s Castle). And also for the presence of Tara Mcpherson posters, Jean Claude Denis and Cyril Pedrosa.

Lisbon has beautiful examples of typography all around the city, and it’s been a long time overdue project of mine to try to capture some of them.
So the other day I decided it was time, and started to post them on Flickr.
You can check them out in here.
This particular photo is from a library, that belongs to a national newspaper called “Diário de Notícias”. The newspaper was founded in 1864, so probably this lettering has more than 100 years.
[Update 2008.11.02] Sufragista showed me what it seems to be a good article about Lisbon Typography on Eye Magazine in 2005(!!). You can take a peek on City of Sound

Praça da Figueira is one of the skater’s favorite places in Lisbon. At least, it’s always pretty crowded. And now, it seems that they’re building a real skate park. Maybe something is going to happen there.

Coming this weekend, the Forum Algarve Four Oceans - European Longboard Tour 2008.
It will take place in Faro, and seems to include a Retro surfboards competition and Stand Up Paddle demonstrations. Who’s coming?
More info at Conquilha .
(One thing I can’t understand is the lack of information, particularly in English)

Perfect waves at São Pedro. If I wasn’t so tired, and so out of shape it would have been a beautiful morning. But it was nice, though.
A special note to the number of surfers in the water. There were less than ten when I arrived. There were more than fifty a few hours later. Surf schools included. On a single spot.
